Approaching your neighbour to help resolve issues

Tips on approaching your neighbour

27/12/2007
  • Exercise tolerance if it's a first incident and low level
  • Keep a record of events so your discussion is based on fact
  • Let a friend or family member know where you are and when you are expect to return
  • Don't call during or immediately after an incident
  • Don't call when you are angry
  • Be polite and assertive not confrontational
  • Stick to the facts
  • Expect your neighbour to be defensive or to make counter accusations
  • Be prepared to acknowledge these if they are true
  • Don't expect to win, expect to reach a compromise

The next step - if you:

  • Have already tried talking to your neighbour and it's not worked
  • Don't feel safe talking to them, or you are not aware of who is causing the problem
You should report it to us and if necessary to the Police.
