Construction of 79 new homes is will underway at a former
cricket ground off Alma Road, Peterborough. The homes are being
built by Accent Nene with the first homes expected to be occupied
by the end of the year. The development, known as The Spinners,
will offer a mix of modern houses and apartments.
The £18 million mixed-use scheme is being funded by the Housing
Corporation. It is being built at the seven-acre former sports
ground previously owned by Perkins Engines. The scheme, which is
located near local amenities and the city centre, will include
housing, recreation facilities and an 'extra care' housing
development for older people being built by Axiom Housing
Association.
The Spinners will comprise terraced homes and 36 two-bedroom
apartments. Accent Nene (formerly Nene Housing Society) will
provide many of the homes for sale under its shared ownership
scheme or for rent. The remainder will be available for outright
sale. The first phase of the development is due for completion in
the autumn with the final phase ready for occupation in May
2008.
Sarah Ellmer, senior development officer at Accent Nene, said:
"There is a high demand for good quality, affordable housing in
Peterborough, particularly for people trying to get onto the
property ladder. The Alma Road development will help address this
need.
"The mixed-use scheme will help to create a thriving new
community which will also help benefit residents locally. We are
looking forward to welcoming the first residents to the
scheme."
Axiom will own and manage the extra care housing development
which will provide 40 one- and two-bedroom self-contained
apartments for older people. Five apartments in the building will
be available for shared ownership while the remainder will be for
rent. The centre will also provide open space for residents and
will include a convenience store and a hair salon. Construction has
begun and the first residents are due to move into the scheme in
summer 2008.
A key feature of the site will be the spacious central green.
This attractive and part landscaped public open space will also
include a children's play area and a dedicated hard paved area for
sports such as basketball.
There are also plans to provide a large new medical facility on
the site for local residents.
Richard Hall, chief executive of Axiom Housing Association, said
"Axiom is committed to creating diverse and sustainable
communities. By working together with Accent Nene we are able to
create a unique village- type community which will provide extra
care to people aged 55 or over."
Councillor John Holdich, portfolio holder for housing and
development, added: "The Spinners is an excellent example of
housing associations and other agencies working together
successfully to provide much needed affordable housing and other
facilities in Peterborough. The development is also important to
the regeneration of Millfield."
